What are PUPs

You may have heard the term PUP before and didn’t understand and know what it mean? Well essentially PUP stands for Potentially Unwanted Program and it is simply a program that may be unwanted, even though the user may have consented to download it through a setup wizard etc. PUPs can include spyware, adware and are often downloaded in conjunction with a program that you wanted. A lot of these are installed by simply clicking on express or recommended installs and not fully understanding what you are intentionally downloaded.

This term PUP was created by McAfee, because marketing firms objected to having their products called “spyware”.

When you install a program next time remember to click on custom or advanced install and carefully read what you are agreeing to install.
