Rivers Unit Responds as Canberra is Inundated with Water

Saturday, 13 February 2010

Today, Rivers Unit chalked up 76.5 hours in storm and water damage operations as Canberra was given a thorough and welcome drenching.

The crew started out the day, ostensibly to participate in a storm and water damage (SWD) training day in preparation for a forthcoming SWD assessment.  Within half an hour of starting training, the would-be SWD assesses and their three trainers, were called out for the real thing.  From a training perspective, the rain could not have come at a more timely or opportune time.  Talk about a fantastic opportunity for some very relevant on-the-job training!

The Rivers crew attended 5 jobs in total, some of which included sandbagging, roof belay systems, temporary roof repairs with black plastic and sand bags, tile replacement and fixing with silicone and gutter cleaning.  They started operations at 0900h and finished up at 1800h.

It was worthwhile and beneficial experience for a few Rivers members, a who knows, with rain still due in over the next 24 hours, they may get to play in the rain again tomorrow!
