Today, the National Emergency Management Volunteers Photo Competition Award Ceremony was held in the front lobby of the High Court of Australia in Canberra. The event marked the start of National Volunteer Week in Australia, which goes from today until 16th May 2010. The winners came from all over Australia, and some who attended the ceremony from as far afield as Western Australia.
Rivers Unit Commander Vicki Munslow and ACTSES Business Support Officer, Tonya Evans (both clad in their high-vis orange uniforms) attended the event as representatives of the SES community.
Australian Attorney General, Hon Robert McClelland MP, and Senator Ursula Stephens, who is the Parliamentary Secretary for the volunteer sector, presented the competition winners with their awards. The AG thanked Australia’s 5 million volunteers for all of their hard work, while Senator Stephens said that “...Volunteers Shape Australia...”.
The State/ Territory emergency management leaders, who were able to attend the event, presented the awards for their respective jurisdictions. For those award winners, whose State/ Territory EM leaders weren’t there, their awards were presented by the Attorney-General and Senator Stephens.
Well done to all the winners and Happy Volunteers Week to all of Australia’s volunteers!
