Rivers Unit Update – Victorian Bushfires Response “BLACK SATURDAY”

Monday, 17 February 2009

Yesterday, the second ACT Victorian bushfire taskforce returned to Canberra after having worked in the Beechworth/ Dederang area since 12 Feb.  The weary 100 member strong team arrived at ESA Headquarters at Curtin at about 2:30pm via coach.  The crews worked in putting containment lines in the Mt Jack and

a ridge line south of Beechworth along Buckland Gap Rd.

On the final morning of the TF2 deployment, the entire taskforce was met by the Australian Federal Trade Minister, Simon Crean and the owner of massive Australian transport company, Linfox – Mr Lindsay Fox.  Mr Crean and Mr Fox both thanked the ACT crews, amongst others, for their contribution to the Victorian bushfire fighting efforts.

The replacement crew for TF2 - Task Force 3 (CHARLIE) left Canberra on Valentine’s Day and commenced duty yesterday morning (15th February) in and around the township of Alexandra (approx 30km ENE from Yea) in Victoria.  Taskforce DELTA, which will be a 139 member strong contingent from ACT Rural Fire Service, ACT State Emergency Service, ACT Fire Brigade, ACT Parks, Conservation & Lands as well as ESA technical experts, will depart Canberra at 1400hrs tomorrow to take over from TF CHARLIE in Alexandra.
