Evening Storms Hits Canberra

14 October 2008

Yesterday evening, the Commander of Rivers Unit ran an SES operation that was raised in response to a short but violent storm that hit Canberra at about 4:30pm and caused quite a bit of damage.

In four hours, 5 x ACTSES crews and the ACT Fire Brigade completed approximately 30 jobs - all of them trees down - around the ACT.  Trees that posed threats to people's safety, such as those across public roads or that threatened to damage or had damaged people's occupied homes were given the highest priority.  Canberra Connect supported the operation by taking calls on the 132500 Storm Hot Line.

The main areas that in which damage was reported were Belconnen, Woden, South Canberra and Weston Creek.

The Rivers Unit Commander and Deputy Commander are the duty Incident Management Team (IMT) for the week starting 13 Oct.
