On
Monday, 15 Sep, Rivers Unit participated in an air search for
a plane (Cessna206) that had gone missing after taking off from
Scone, NSW at approximately 10am on Sunday, 14 Sep. The Rivers air
observer was part of a 4 person strong ACT SES search crew. They
departed Canberra Airport at 0650hrs on a
Corporate Air Conquest II fixed-wing aircraft that had been
tasked to the search and rescue by the
Rescue Coordination Centre.
The
ACTSES air search crew was tasked with searching the area
between Scone and Casino and encountered severe turbulence in the
mountainous region to the north of Scone. When the plane returned
to Canberra at approximately 1530hrs, they landed in gale-force
winds, which made for a very interesting landing!
The
missing plane was located by
NRMA Careflight at approximately 12:30pm that day.
The
ACT State Emergency Service performs air search as one of its many
functions for the community and has numerous AMSA-qualified air
observers in its ranks.
