 About Us

Rivers Unit is composed entirely of volunteers. Rivers Unit participates in a wide range of emergency operations, training sessions/ exercises and community events. For statistics on the Unit, please look at our ‘Stats’ section.

Some of the reasons that people have joined Rivers Unit are:

- To belong to a team
- To help the community and ‘give something back’
- To learn some valuable, practical skills
- To challenge themselves
- To have fun!
- To help them reach for a job in a professional emergency service later on.

Our members range in age from 18 to 50 +. As you might expect from an SES Unit based in Canberra, a significant portion of our members work in the Public Sector (both at Federal and ACT levels). This can be really good, particularly as lot of have Government Departments have emergency duty leave built in to their collective/ workplace agreements, so getting time off to attend SES operations is sometimes less difficult.
