Fraudulent PDF software and Google Earth tools

The following operating system platforms:

What is the problem?

Earlier this year, AusCERT warned of spam emails advertising anti-virus and then PDF software. Over the past few months these emails have become prolific, focusing mostly on PDF software but more recently advertising Google Earth tools. The emails are particularly alarming due to the variety of website addresses referenced in the emails making them difficult to block.

The websites and the advertised software may infect your computer with malware, steal credit card details, passwords, and other personal information, or all of the above. If criminals are able to obtain this kind of information you could be at risk of identity theft, financial losses, or the facilitation of fraud in your name.

The subject lines of the email messages include, but are not limited to:

Say Hello to your New PDF Software
The Essential PDF Software for Productivity
Get with the PDF Software that Works for You
Add your Contact List to Google Earth
Looking for the Best Way to Travel? Your Search Starts and ends Here!

The from lines of the email include, but are not limited to:

info@oderts,com
info@janeersi,com
reply@aussupoort10,com
reply@supportjan1,com
reply@subscriberinbox,com

The links in the email open or re-direct to a number of different websites, those seen so far (do not attempt to visit these websites!):

hxp;//membersupportlogin,com
hxxp;//online-signup-form,com
hxxp;//dailyofficial-version,com

Three sample emails and websites are listed below (there are others):

What we recommend you do

If you receive an email similar to the above delete the message immediately. Do not click on any links, reply to the email, or forward to any of your contacts.

If you have visited the websites, or purchased and downloaded the advertised software, it is quite possible your computer may now be infected. It is recommended you seek professional assistance in helping detect and remove the malware and that you contact your financial institution for advice.

Make sure you have anti-virus software installed and keep it updated.

If you suspect any weird or unsual behaviour, please contact our Customer Service Centre 24×7 for advice.
